Orthotics work as a shock absorber to remove stress and pressure from the pained areas of the foot and ankle. They produce a proper alignment of the foot and restore correct balance. Research shows that pain in the knees, hips and back can often be traced to a foot imbalance.
Prefabricated orthotics are mass-produced to fit an average foot. They usually
cost less, but they do not correct specific problems in an individual’s foot
balance, etc. The results of using pre-made orthotics can therefore potentially
cause more harm than good. Many times these orthotics even worsen a foot condition
and create problems in other parts of the body. People with heel, Achilles
tendon pain, back pain, knee pain, or those with a high arched foot or flat
feet are at a particular risk to extended bodily damage from the use of prefabricated
orthotics.
Customized orthotics are prescribed by a doctor of chiropractic, orthopedic and podiatric medicine, and should not be confused with prefabricated models found in pharmacies, shoe stores, catalogues or prescription orthotics. There is a large difference in the quality and results produced from custom orthotics and prescription orthotics. Those who provide orthotics in addition to their other business may not be properly qualified or trained.
North Star Podiatric Lab provides prescription orthotics that are completely designed to fit the specific needs of an individual. These orthotics are designed through scanning, casting, or by impression to fit the exact contours of the individual’s foot. Therefore, extended, bodily damage cannot occur because of an imprecise fit or contour in the design of the orthotic. The orthotics are also lined with a top covering determined specifically to the advantage of a patient’s needs.
